It was a pleasure to meet Kristen at the market a few weeks back. A mother of four and a passionate supporter of all things local she is a great addition to our Lynchburg community. I enjoyed talking to her very much and I hope you all enjoy reading about why she chooses to buy local:

What do you like best about coming to the market?
I love seeing the same smiling people week after week and bumping into new and old friends. The kids love seeing if they’ve earned a special snack from Lorraine’s Bakery.

Why do you choose to eat local food?
Our family chooses to eat local food because we want to support local farming. We love that our food doesn’t have to travel long distances, doesn’t have as many (or any) chemicals or antibiotics, and is tastier than what we could buy at the grocery store. We make sure the kids know who and where their food comes from and how much work it is to plant, grow, harvest and sell it.

What’s your favorite fruit and vegetable? And why?
This time of year my favorite fruit is the tomato–I eat them straight out of the container or with goat cheese on top. They are so refreshing.
The kids all love blueberries. They will eat them until their tongues turn blue. For vegetables, we’re a bit more boring. The kids love broccoli or crispy kale and my husband and I both prefer anything you can toss in a big salad. We will all be sad when peach season ends this year.

What are you going to make with your local produce this week?
We are using our sage to add to ground pork for pork burgers and we took our first stab at poached duck eggs with sauteed arugula. Not bad! Every day we have been making a big cucumber tomato salad with Spring Mill Farms feta. The kids are snacking on plums, ground cherries, raspberries and homemade granola bars.
