Right now is the time to stock up on berries at the market. Blackberries, cherries, blueberries, and raspberries (or even black raspberries) can be found at almost each of our farmers booths. We all agree that they are delicious (even kids agree) and the good news is that doctors want us to eat them too! Each has their own health benefit but one thing they seem to have in common is that they are low in calories and help in cancer prevention. Here are some quick facts and their flavor affinities:

Blackberries

  • full of vitamin C
  • contain a compound which inhibits tumorsIMG_0443
  • great with a bowl of cereal or added to a smoothie
  • blackberries + honey + vanilla + yoghurt

Raspberries

  • increase metabolism
  • anti-oxidant rich but only if organic
  • raspberries + lemon + peaches

Cherries

  • food source for melatonin so they help aid sleep
  • help lower blood pressure
  • cherries + chocolate + walnuts

Blueberries

  • antioxidant super food
  • help slow down the onset of age-related memory function
  • in people with type 2 diabetes actually help regulate blood sugar
  • blueberries + lemon zest + maple syrup
